Pearson BTEC Level 1 Introductory in Hair and Beauty
The BTEC Level 1 Introductory in Hair & Beauty Therapy is a two year programme designed to give you the underpinning knowledge and skills of how to become a professional therapist in today’s industry. Covering a wide range of skills both practically and theoretically, throughout the two years, you will cover areas such as:
Health and Safety, Being Organised, Customer Care, Progression Opportunities, Consultations, Facials, Manicures, Nail art, Make- up techniques, Creating a themed make-up and Hair Styling piece.
The BTEC Level 1 qualification is delivered on site at Larches High School, this will be delivered by a qualified industry professional.

All BTEC qualifications are completed and marked through assignment, portfolio evidence, practical assessment and observation.

Finding out about progression opportunities to help create a personal progression plan. Identifying the skills and behaviours needed to meet these goals. Setting individual progression goals, Identifying the skills and behaviours needed to meet the requirements. Reviewing own skills and behaviours against expectations and creating a personalised progression plan.
Outlining the importance of health and safety with in a salon environment. How to consult with clients, how to prepare before a hair or beauty treatment. Customer care, Safe and hygienic working practices in a salon. Different types of hair or beauty tasks, presenting a professional image with client aftercare, covering a wide range of contra-indications found on the skin/hair before or during a skincare/ haircare treatment. Identify what a contra-indication is and how this can prevent or restrict a treatment. How to look for contra-indications. Where to record contra- actions and accidents along with client aftercare. Create a safe working environment to demonstrate a hair or beauty treatment. Learn new techniques and practice skills. To be able to demonstrate skills, client care and self-evaluation of each practice.

Rationale | This unit will help the learners to find out what opportunities are available to them when they finish this course. It allows them to consider whether they will continue to study in this subject field or whether they want to do something completely different. Before they decide what their next steps are, the learners will need to know what they are good at, what their interests are and what their end goal is. The unit allows them to carry out a self-audit, identifying their strengths and how to progress and develop to meet your progression goals. They will learn how to set goals and plan ways to achieve them. They will also produce a personal progression plan to help them reach the next steps in life. The skills that the learners develop in this unit will be good preparation when applying for another course or training programme. | This is the 1st hair and beauty unit that allows learners to develop and practise, under supervision, practical skills used in hair and beauty in a salon environment. This unit gives the learners the opportunity to carry out a specific hair and beauty task. This will take place in a salon environment where the learner is expected to treat the client in a professional manner at all times.
The learner will carry out a hair and beauty task, where the client will also be asked to provide feedback about the performance of the learner and their client care. The unit teachers learners how to behave in a professional manner and how to maintain safe and hygienic working practices. Rationale | This unit allow the students to learn how to be organised and be able to manage their own time; as this is essential for success in education. From creating to do lists and filing systems to setting alarms and alerts on the phone this unit introduces ways to the learners to help plan and use their time more effectively. It also helps them organise their work better. After learning and practising the techniques the learners can review how successful they were at their organisational skills. | This unit allows the leaners to learn about the many aspects of nail art treatments. The learners all love to have their nails done so this is a great unit to develop and practise their skills further using nail art techniques.
This unit introduces the procedures for preparing clients and the tools, products and equipment used for nail art treatments. The unit will help the learners to develop skills and knowledge about nail art. They will be able to show their creative side and work independently to create new 2D and 3D images to use on nails. The learners will also learn how to prepare for a client by carrying out a consultation and ensure the nail station is also prepared in a safe and hygienic environment. The experience gained in this unit will help to develop practical skills in the design and application on nail art. This will form the foundation for future development should they wish to pursue this career. |
In this unit, they will learn about the many products used in makeup application, along with the equipment required and the techniques used. This unit is a favourite amongst all the learners as enjoy working at the makeup stations to do makeup applications. They will learn about the different skin types as well as the main structures and functions of the skin. This knowledge will help them make decisions about the right makeup to use on a client. They will also be supervised applying basic makeup to create day, evening or special occasion looks.
The learners will develop skills and knowledge about makeup techniques and applications. They will be able to show their creative side and work independently to create new looks. The experience gained in this unit will help to develop practical skills essential for any kind of makeup application. This will form the foundation to progress to further learning.
In this unit the leaners have an opportunity to develop and practise skills in hair management and styling.
The unit allows the student to learn basic styling techniques for men and women and to develop their hairdressing skills. This builds on existing skills such as blow drying, shampooing, conditioning, hair straightening and using hair products. The students will learn the structure of the hair, the different hair types and conditions. They learn how to use different styling techniques and what factors influence styling. This knowledge will enable them to learn to use different techniques to carry out hair procedures and techniques in a hygienic and safe way. |

Literacy and Numeracy Statement of Intent- Literacy and numeracy is embedded within all lessons. Literacy will be in all written work which is marked with learner feedback attached promptly. Numeracy is used throughout practical and theory lesson for measuring product amount and through timing of treatments and technique movements. |
Evaluation at end of academic year- On completion of this Award learners will move onto their Level 1 Beauty Therapy Certificate.
On completion of the Certificate, learners can enrol onto a Beauty Therapy Level 2 course at college. |
