Curriculum

Our prime focus for students who attend Larches High School is to ensure they are in the correct educational setting for their needs and abilities. We spend a great deal of time supporting students back into mainstream schools or working through the process of acquiring the EHC plan and possible placement at a Special School. We offer a range of subjects, ensuring that pupils follow a broad and balanced curriculum to promote spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development. Pupils across both key stages are offered individual personalised timetables.

Key Stage 3

During their first three years ( Years 7, 8 and 9) pupils study a series of broad and highly differentiated subjects. Mathematics (start 3 year GCSE course in Year 9 for applicable students), English, Science, Information Communication Technology, Physical Education, Art, Arts and Crafts, Religious Education, ASDAN, Food Technology and Life Skills. Students also have the opportunity to attend Forest Schools training we run a military-styled course that focuses on interpersonal skills, command tasks and communication skills . Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship is taught to all pupils and everyone in KS3 attends a Nurture Group. Additionally all pupils follow an interactive programme to improve literacy skills.

Key Stage 4

During Years 10 and 11 pupils choose either an academic or a vocational curriculum.

All pupils study the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, and also Art, PE, PSHE, Preparation for Working Life, Prince’s Trust and Health & Hygiene. We also offer the Maths Leader award and the Sports Leader Award.

Pupils who follow our vocational curriculum will study with external Alternative Providers for two days per week and more traditional subjects in school for the remaining three days per week. We currently offer places at Preston Vocational Centre, Training 2000 (uniformed services preparation) and CAST (Fisheries management).

Access to these provisions are subject to student numbers and OUTSTANDING BEHAVIOUR AND ATTENDANCE.

In addition, ‘Catch-up’ sessions are provided for pupils who we deem require extra support in their studies and especially during the period of exam preparation.
